Clark Air Base Scrapbook

Early 70s

by Thomas C. Utts

The following pictures are from Mike McFerrin, who was an aircraft
maintenance crew chief in the 604th Military Airlift Support Squadron in 1970 and 1971.
The Vietnam war still raged and Clark was a busy, crowded place, especially on the flightline.

The crowded
Clark flightline,
with MAC flights
to and from
Vietnam.

Golf 2, the 604th mobile
command van with the
shift chief with parts,
tools, a status board
and a radio to contact
Maintenance Control.

All right! Now that is an outstanding view of a C-141. Mike took it during at a base open house.

Another nice mood
picture of a C-141

Not sure how
Mike got this
excellent night
lighting effect
on this C-5,
but I like it.

Okay, here a case where a
really good subject makes up
for a not so great picture. Those
dark blobs in the middle are
two Clark F-4s lifting off
in front of Mt. Arayat.

Oh, those lovely Clark streets. This one is by the base hotel.

And here is the
base hotel in the
70s. Nice place,
but it was always
full when I was
TDY from
Honolulu.

Kelly Cafeteria on

Kelly Theater in
back.

Another view
of the Kelly
theater.

The base hobby
shop, with wonderful
vintage cars and
awesome trees.

(L) The main base swimming pool. Lilly Hill in the background. (R) Mike McFerrin on the
day he pinned on his sergeant stripes. He was living in the old barracks not-so-affectionately
known as the chicken coops. He eventually moved to the NCO barracks on the flightline.

I love this one.
Doesn't this picture
just shout: PI!
If the passengers
are outside pushing,
it's gotta be the PI.

One of my favorite food
stops on MacArthur
Highway. Great burgers,
and for those like me who
hated root beer, they
had San Magoo!

(L)--A back street I'm glad I missed. (R)--OK, so it is a grainy photo, but
it is a good sari-sari story shot and one of the few in the Clark Scrapbook.

For his big finish Mike sent a couple excellent black & white photos. In view of the
Philippine's 1991 invitation to zigga-na, I think these pictures offer comment
on technology and civilization at the end of the American century in 'da PI.
